I met up with Mika last Thursday. I have not seen her for more than a year so we had a lot of things to talk about. Our conversation dealt with planning our careers for the most part.

I found out that just like me, she is still unemployed. I really did not expect that considering that she is a registered nurse. There is a great demand of nurses abroad and since many Filipino nurses opt to work in these other countries, local hospitals are said to be in need of more nurses. As it turns out, most local hospitals have a good number of nurses. I learned from Mika that in one hospital she sent her applicatin to in August, she was told to return in January because that is only when they can start accepting Nursing graduates of 2007 as all the positions are filled. She even adds that in her circle of college friends, many are still unemployed.

I used to think that the exodus of the Filipino nurses was detrimental to the country because it would eventually lead to the shortage of nurses. I guess this notion is anachronistic because reality says the country is not lacking nurses but jobs to be filled.
